About CYR Scheme

1. “Connect with Your Roots" (CYR) Programme for Young Boys and Girls of Punjabi Origin settled abroad.

1.1 The Programme would provide an opportunity to the youngsters settled in different parts of the world, to visit the places from where their families hailed or  where their ancestors were born, or where they themselves spent their early years.

1.2 This scheme will be part of Friends of Punjab Garima Gram Yojana scheme and will be financed from this scheme only viz.–06-Friends of Punjab Mukh Mantri Garima Gram Yojana – Plan Scheme NRI-2. Likely Expenditure for a group of 15 NRIs on a ten days tour would be Rs 3.00 to 4.00 lac. In all 6 to 8 groups would visit the state of Punjab in a year.

2 . The proposed scheme could be open to young boys and girls in the  16-26 years of age group as there is a lot of curiosity among Indian-Origin youngsters settled in others countries to know about their ancestral home. The proposed Scheme would open to Young Boys and Girls of NRIs Parents living abroad, a platform to go back to their roots and connect with their roots and discover their identities. The visit would also give thses youngster a chance to learn and speak their native language. It would also enable them to learn about their family background and the culture to which they belong and also to build an emotional bonding with the Country of their roots. In the long run this programme will  enhance the NRIs engagment at the level of the Youth, who can be a vital engine in the State’s progress to achieve social harmony, modernity and all round development of  its youth living abroad and in Punjab.

                        The dates of programme can be scheduled to align with the academic  calender and school/Collage vacations of the participants. We can also try to link the dates with the traditional Punjabi festivals and auspicious days, such as Lohri, Holi, Baisakhi, Gurupurabs and Diwali etc.

                        Initially, the programme will be open to youth from U.K, Germany, France, Itally, Balgium, U.S.A and Canada. However, youngsters from U.K would be the first ones to pack their bags and fly out to India. 

The eligibility criteria for this scheme is as under:

Age  : 16 to 26 years of age, espacially those who have never visited India.

The Punjab Government would be ready to welcome the first batch of fifteen participants from as early as November 2017. Dedicated coaches to pick up the group from Delhi or Amritsar airports would be deployed.

Once the participants set foot in India, all expenses on travel, boarding, lodging and sightseeing will be borne by the Givernment of Punjab. We are looking at having a group of fifteen participants from different countries every two months. And we intend to cover six different countries in a year. 

A Portal, facebook page and e-mail address (cyr@punjab.gov.in) has been created for Connet With Your Roots programme.

How to Apply:

The NRI boys and girls will apply on the Portal created by Department of NRI Affairs on Punjab Government Website-(www.punjab.gov.in) or (http://www.nripunjab.gov.in)

  • NRI Boys and Girls born in Punjab.
  • NRI Boys and Girls born to NRI parents.
  •  Boys and Girls  whose grand parents or great grand parents  were born   in Punjab.
  • The Youth will initially be drawn from UK, USA, EU, Canada, Australia.
  • 15 boys and girls in batches to visit Punjab.
  • Each batch will be drawn from a different Country/Region.
  • To and fro travel to India will be paid by the applicant.
  • The Arrangement for Boarding and Loading of such participants and their local travel sightseeing plan will be made by the Government of Punjab.
  • Publicity material will be made available through the Embassies/High  Commissions of India.
  • Facebook Page is being launched shortly.
  • Detail of CYR scheme may be seen from NRI portel 
  • 10 days programme.
  • The boys and girls willing to visit Punjab under this scheme would apply  to the Government at least forty days in advance of the tour programme.
  • The Government of Punjab, the Department of NRIs Affairs would finalise the list of visitors, at least a month prior to their visit and intimate each applicant so that they can complete the formalities like getting the visa etc.
  • Visit to ancestral places etc.
  • Visit to cultural/historical places in Punjab.
  • Visit to old monuments and historical and cultural places such as:
  • Sri Harmandar Sahib
  • Jallianwala Bagh
  • Wagah Border
  • Bhagat Singh Memorial at Banga.
  • Khalsa Heritage Memorial(Anandhpur Sahib)
  • War Memorial Amritsar
  • Jang-e-Azaadi War Memorial
  • Visit to Schools, Colleges and Universities.
  • Visit to Punjab Vidhan Sabha, Punjab Civil Secretariat and Punjab & Haryana High Court.
  • Visit to centres of Excellence in the field of Punjabi Language, Agriculture, Industry, Dams/ Irrigarion etc.
  • Home-Stay programme in a village for three days. Government would be requesting families based in Punjab to volunteer for the home-stay programm.
  • Visits to old and famous food joints in Amritsar, Patiala, Ludhiana etc. to savour traditional delicasies and street foods, such as tikkas, Amritsari kulchas, Amritsari machhi, lassi and Giani di Cha of Amritsar, kachorries of patiala and haveli Food in jalandhar etc. Almost every city has something unique to offer.
  • 3 .The proposal to implement this scheme is attached as Annexure-

  • 4.The CMM is requested to give its approval to the scheme shown under para 2.

  • 5.The Hon’ble Chief Minister as Minister of NRIs Affairs Punjab has seen the memorandum and approved it.

  • 6.The approval of the Hon’ble Chief Minister has been obtained to submit the Memorandum in CMM.
